Map making basics by Andrew Cockerham.

How Do You Make a Map in Brotherhood of Battle?

Brotherhood of Battle is an online turn-based strategy game produced by Xgen Studios. The game has you competing against other human players in a variety of familiar strategy scenarios: Capture the Flag, Death Match and others. During each turn, your units are allowed to move a certain distance, then must use one of their abilities--attacking, healing or defending, for example--before you end your turn. While the game offers many premade maps, adventurous players may wish to make their own maps as a challenge for themselves and others.

Instructions
Things You'll Need: Computer with Internet access
Difficulty: Moderately Easy

  1. Open the Brotherhood of Battle game in your web browser. Click on "Editor."

  2. Click on the "Flag" icon to add items essential to gameplay. By default, you will see the items necessary for an "Assault" scenario.

  3. Add an "Orb," indicated by a yellow pillar with a red globe on top, by clicking the icon in the lower left box, then clicking on the map. Leave the Orb set to "Team 1." Add one Orb for each player--you can have as many as four. Designate each Orb for a different team by clicking the appropriate colored square in the dialog box that appears when you place the Orb on the map.

  4. Add a "Fortress," indicated by a palace-type building with red trim, for each player. Assign each Fortress to a team and add one "Spawn" area for each. Spawn areas are indicated by a group of five circles with an arrow inside each. This is where new units will appear for each team.

  5. Add at least one "Gold Mine," indicated by a gray rock with yellow spots. Your map is now playable for either a "Brotherhood Battle" (a free-for-all death match scenario), an "Assault" scenario or a "Gold Rush," in which you must fight to collect gold. Use the other controls in the lower left of the window to add any cosmetic props you wish.

  6. Save your map by clicking "File," then typing in a name for the map and clicking "Save to Text." This will give you a unique code, which you may use to load the map later. If you wish to make your map playable for other scenarios, continue to Step 7.

  7. Click the menu in the upper-right corner of the map. Select "Capture the Flag." In the vital items area (accessed by clicking the "Flag" icon), you will see a "Flag Pole" appear in place of an Orb. Add one Flag Pole for each player, then save your map, which is now playable as a "Capture the Flag" scenario. If you wish to make your map playable for another scenario, continue to Step 8.

  8. Click the menu in the upper-right corner of the map and select "Capture and Hold." A large white circle will appear in the vital items area in place of the Flag Pole or the Orb. This is a "Mana Well." Add one for each player. Your map is now playable as a "Capture and Hold" scenario.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only the items accessed by clicking on the "Flag" icon are vital to gameplay. All other items are just for decoration, so you can place as many or as few of them as you like.

  • You can alter available ground textures (found under the icon of the circle divided into thirds) by clicking "Options" and adding a new texture or altering an existing one using sliders.

  • Don't lose the code that you receive for your saved map. You will lose your work if you lose the code.

- ADDITIONAL INFORMATION -

CODE PRESERVATION

It is strongly advised to save map making progress on regular basis
to prevent accidental loss of work.

Two save options are available -
save to text, which allows the transfer of entire map text from the editor,
and save to cookie, which enables the usage of the map in custom games.

Simultaneous use of both options is recommended.
